KOCHI: As the monsoon approaches, it’s time to rejuvenate your body and boost immunity to prevent seasonal illness.

The Ayurvedic rejuvenation program, Karkidaka Chikitsa, done between June and August is the need of the hour.

According to Ayurveda, from birth the human body is a combination of three types of doshas – vata, pitta and kapha. “With the seasonal changes, the doshas will face an imbalance and make the body prone to disease. To keep the doshas under control, Karkidaka Chikitsa or monsoon rejuvenation treatment is needed, ”says Dr Basimah.

During the rainy season, the body will be in a sedentary state and have a slow metabolism. Those who suffer from spondylitis, back pain, stress, insomnia and depression can find relief with the right treatment, improving quality of life, adds Basimah.

External and internal cleaning
Although Karkidaka Chikitsa is mostly done during the monsoon season, that doesn’t mean detox cannot be done at other times of the year. “Performing the rejuvenation treatment at least once a year can make a positive difference to the human body, regardless of age,” says Basimah. Karkidaka Chikitsa encompasses different external treatments such as Abyangam, Kizhi, Dhara, Njavara kizhi, Pizhichil and Nayasam.

This form of treatment controls the “Vata dosha”. By massaging the whole body from head to toe with warm medicinal oil, it will strengthen the physical and mental state of a person.

Ela and Podi Kizhi therapy involves mixing different types of medicinal leaves, herbal powders. The ingredients are fried together and wrapped in a cotton cloth. This form of therapy is helpful in reducing pain and inflammation, opening up tissues improving circulation.

The whole body or a specific part of the body is made to sweat by applying drugs with Njavara rice puddings externally in the form of boluses tied in a cotton bag. It will help cure rheumatic and arthritic difficulties, skin conditions, neurological problems.

This is effective in the treatment of hypertension, asthma and various sexual weaknesses. The warm medicinal oil is gently squeezed and massaged all over the body, which improves blood circulation and energizes the body.
