Have you heard the new Republican conspiracy theory on the Omicron variant?

“Here is the SRM – the variant of the midterm elections,” Jackson tweeted, who, not for nothing, is also a doctor. “They NEED a reason to push unsolicited mail-in ballots nationwide. Democrats will do anything to CHEAT in an election – but we’re not going to let them!”
And then there was this from Fox News personality Pete Hegseth: “Count on a variation every October, every two years.”

The idea here is clear: the emergence of Omicron is a political bet by Democrats to help them at the polls.

It is, in a nutshell, stupid.

Start here: Covid-19 variations don’t follow, uh, the laws of politics. The Omicron variant – which we still know very little about other than having a number of mutations from earlier disease cycles – appears to originate from southern Africa. Which, the last time I checked, is not the political base of the Democrats – or Republicans for that matter. I’m pretty sure those countries aren’t thinking about the impact this will have on postal voting in the United States in the 2022 election.

Then there’s this: Omicron’s rise to power – and the fear it has already engendered among the public – is, without a doubt, terrible policy for President Joe Biden.

Biden ran on one post: the skill to reduce the prevalence of this virus. It was the sine qua non of this campaign: I will bring the Covid-19 under control – and this will allow us to return to a semblance of normalcy.

“We are entering what may well be the most difficult and deadly time of the virus,” Biden said in his inaugural address in January. “We must put politics aside and finally face this pandemic as one nation. “

This grandiose vision collided directly with the abrupt reality of an infectious disease. The emergence of the Delta variant over the summer in the United States sparked a further surge in the number of cases – and a subsequent drop in Biden’s approval ratings. In a June Fox News Poll, 64% of Americans approved of the work he was doing in managing Covid-19. In November, that number had fallen to 48%.

What Biden badly needs right now is good news about the virus, evidence that this long national nightmare is (finally) starting to ease. Instead, on Monday, Biden spoke to the country about his decision to ban travel from a handful of African countries that have seen the bulk of Omicron cases.

“Sooner or later we’ll see cases of this new variant here in the United States,” Biden said on Monday. “We will have to face this new threat just as we face those who came before it.”

Although this is a recognition of reality, it is the exact the opposite of where Biden (and his team) wanted to be at the end of November 2021. This suggests that Biden doesn’t have all the answers about this new variant (in truth, no one has) and that the pandemic isn’t nearly done with us yet. For a man who based his entire campaign on the idea of using his leadership and skills to end or dramatically reduce a virus that has killed more than 776,000 Americans, today was a terrible day – politically speaking.

Why can’t Jackson figure this out? Because they have been fed lies for so long that the truth now seems strange to them. But it’s the truth: the Omicron variant is absolutely horrible for Biden’s political outlook – even though Jackson and his ilk are too blind to see it.
